The
Irish national Bakery team scooped a historic Silver
at the European Bakery Championships at Herning, Denmark
earlier this Month . The team finished Second behind
Switzerland and Denmark was third. The team had to
produce in a marathon eight hour working day a range
of Pastry, bread and an artistic bread piece. The
team coach and Irish jury member, Jimmy Griffin of
Griffin's Bakery, Galway was over the moon with the
result. The team consisting of Jimmy Griffin - Jury
member (Galway) , Dolores Spain from Co Clare ( Pastry),
Michelle O Connor from Co Kerry ( Artistic Piece),
Robert Humphries from Co Kildare all teaching Staff
at the National Bakery School, DIT Kevin Street, Dublin.
Mr Derek O Brien head of bakery department at DIT,
the team selector, was delighted with the success
of the team. This event is now held annually in Europe
and is the premier craft bakery competition in Europe
with teams competing from most European countries.
The Irish competed against the biggest names in European
bakery, beating off the challenges of Luxembourg,
France and Iceland to claim their Silver placing.
This
is the first time in history that Ireland have had
a Silver podium finish in a Bakery event. Ireland
have had previous success in this event with the same
team taking Bronze last year at Nantes and a team
with Jimmy Griffin at the helm took the Bronze in
1997. The team wowed the Judges with their stunning
"Carnival" artistic piece, hand made fermented
sourdough breads and delicious butter pastries to
finish just behind the Swiss and in front of Denmark.
It is a fantastic achievement for Ireland and the
Irish Bakers have proved that they can compete with
the very best Europe has to offer. The team are setting
their sights on Gold in France next year.
Griffin’s Bakery Get the nod in Bridgestone Irish Food Guide
“ This humungously busy bakery in the centre of Galway looks pretty conventional at first - the breads and cakes look pretty much the same as those that are sold in every other bakery in Ireland – but look further and you will see that they sell interesting sourdough and pain au levain breads and other artisan quality baking”
